Supporting the Arts - 18 DCU Students Receive Arts Bursary Award

Eighteen students have received a DCU Arts Bursary Award for 2019/20 to invest in their chosen fields of excellence, which include literature, music, visual arts, dance, videography and photography.

The bursaries were awarded by DCU’s Office of Student Life, with support from DCU Educational Trust. The Arts Bursary was established in 2009 to promote excellence in arts and culture at DCU, and to encourage the students to pursue their talents.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students are invited to apply for the bursary each academic year outlining their achievements, future aspirations and how they intend to spend any bursary they may be awarded. To date, over 60 students have benefited from the scheme.

Speaking on the awards, Mary Shine Thompson, a member of DCU Educational Trust’s Council of Trustees and a member of the Arts Bursary judging panel, said:

“DCU Educational Trust and DCU take great pride in the creativity of the DCU community and especially of its students. We heartily congratulate the winners of the student bursaries. These awards testify to the winning students’ talents, their hard work and their invaluable contribution to wellbeing. They exemplify the spirit of DCU at its best.”

Hannah Cullen O’Donovan, a first year Communication Studies student, was one of this year’s awardees. Hannah is an accomplished musician with credits including a Distinction in Grade 8 in piano, viola and classical singing. Hannah described what the support from DCU meant to her:

“I was delighted to receive the DCU Arts Bursary as I had the opportunity to purchase music equipment that enhanced my performance as a session musician. I am very grateful for DCU’s ongoing support and look forward to future engaegements with the arts programme.”
