DCU’s Excellence and Opportunity Fund enables talented students to pursue doctoral research that makes an impact. In this video, final-year PhD students Lauren Kearney and Katie O’Rourke share how that support is helping them to take on some of our world’s most pressing challenges: tackling global warming and protecting biodiversity.
Through the Excellence and Opportunity Fund, our supporters create an open door for bright minds to excel and make their mark on the future. Powering research into green hydrogen fuel and detecting pharmaceutical pollution in freshwater ecosystems are just some of the ways the talented PhD students supported by this fund transform lives and society.
Katie O’Rourke was awarded the Orla Benson Memorial Scholarship for 2022/23. This scholarship was created by the friends and family of Orla Benson, a graduate of the class of 1995 who sadly passed away in the summer months before her graduation. The memorial scholarship offered by the Benson family is presented each year to a student demonstrating outstanding potential in the field of Biotechnology.
Lauren Kearney was supported by the Sinéad Strain Goldman Sachs STEM Scholarship, which was awarded for the first time in 2022/23 to support to an exceptional female STEM student engaged in postgraduate study.
