51 Scholarships Awarded at A Celebration of Memorial and Endowed Scholarships at DCU

On Wednesday 6th November, 51 students received scholarship awards at an event on DCU’s Glasnevin Campus.

This annual event in the DCU calendar honours past students, staff and friends of DCU who are remembered through memorial scholarships, as well as celebrating those who support future generations of DCU students through endowed scholarships.

31 students received a memorial scholarship created in memory of some of the University’s most cherished past students, staff and friends, and a further 14 students were awarded DCU’s endowed scholarships and ICON scholarships, generously created by friends and supporters of the university.

A total of six new fully funded doctoral scholarships were also awarded at the event, supporting talented PhD students to pursue research with impact in the fields of cancer research, health psychology and inclusive education.

The Paula and Hannah Delves Scholarship was established this year to help advance cancer research in DCU Life Sciences Institute, and will enable recipient Orla Cremen to pursue vital research in targeted cancer treatments. The Deloitte Access PhD Scholarship, created to support students from low-income backgrounds to progress to doctoral level, was also presented at the event. This scholarship will support PhD student Adam Daly to pursue doctoral research in cancer survivorship in DCU School of Psychology. A further four doctoral students were awarded the Autism Education PhD Scholarships, created through matched funding from philanthropist Paul Kerley and Bank of Ireland.

The students receiving this year’s scholarships were selected based on different criteria, depending on the wishes of those who created the scholarship. These include undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme, postgraduate students at master and doctoral level, and students with outstanding sporting and academic achievements.

Speaking at the event, Declan Raftery, Chief Operations Officer of Dublin City University, commented:

“Memorial and endowed scholarships make an enduring contribution to the University’s mission to transform lives and societies. By creating opportunities for doctoral research that tackles some of the world’s most pressing challenges, and opening a door for talented students to excel, these scholarships are supporting more DCU students to make their mark on the world. We are proud to honour those who created these scholarships, and our friends and loved ones who are remembered through them.”
