Ultan Doyle - "Do what you can, no matter how small"

Ultan Doyle is a DCU Business School alumnus and Finance Leader at Eaton. In this piece, he looks back on his time at DCU and shares why he’s proud to give back to the university.

Tell us about your time as a student in DCU.

DCU has a great reputation as a young, industry-focused university. I was very impressed by the prospectus and course content in the Business Studies programme, which stood out to me as more entrepreneurial and strategic in nature than what other colleges were offering. That was what drove my decision to study here.

I loved my time in the university. I made great friends here, many of whom I am still in contact with today. I also found the lecturing staff and facilities excellent in DCU.

Could you share a bit about your career now – and how you got there?

I started my own business after college, which I ran for a few years. I then transitioned back into industry, working in finance in Bank of Ireland and later in Eaton.

Education has always been important to me, and I added professional qualifications in accountancy and financial advice while working full-time. I can safely say that the qualifications I gained in DCU have helped me significantly in my career to date.

What first inspired you to support Excellence and Opportunity at DCU? And what continues to inspire you today?

I believe that education is the tide that lifts all boats. I have always been so grateful for the opportunity I had to study, which ultimately gave me a great life. I’m aware that not everyone has been as fortunate as me, and I felt it was incumbent on me to help others access the same opportunities that I had.

What advice would you give to other graduates thinking about giving back to DCU?

Do it. I hope you achieved more in your life because of a great education. This is an opportunity to change the lives of young people who will go on to have an impact on our society, our community and our economy. Do what you can, no matter how small. It will change many lives.
