Elena Connolly is Head of People and Culture with chartered accountancy firm BDO. In this piece, she describes how the firm’s support for DCU Access to the Workplace is contributing to a more diverse, inclusive and innovative workforce.
What motivates BDO Ireland to support the DCU Access Programme?

BDO Ireland is proud to support the DCU Access Programme because it reflects our commitment to equity, opportunity, and long-term talent development. We believe that ability and ambition should never be limited by circumstance, and this
programme plays a vital role in removing barriers for students entering the workplace.

Supporting Access is not only aligned with our values, it also contributes to a more diverse and inclusive workforce, which we see as essential to innovation and sustainable growth. By investing in students early in their journey, we help build
confidence, capability, and a stronger pipeline of future professionals. It’s a partnership that benefits the students, the university, and the broader business community.

Access to the Workplace aims to create a level playing field for our graduates. How does this align with your own values as a company?

DCU’s Access to the Workplace programme closely aligns with our company’s values and purpose. We believe that diverse perspectives drive better ideas, and our value statement, Ideas – People – Trust, reflects our commitment to building a culture rooted in inclusion, integrity, and growth.

We are dedicated to supporting talent from all backgrounds, particularly those who may face barriers to entry. This programme provides meaningful opportunities for students who might not otherwise have access to professional environments. It allows us to recognise potential early and invest in the development of future leaders.

Creating a level playing field is not only the right thing to do, but it also contributes to a more innovative, resilient, and forward-looking workforce. We see initiatives like the Access to the Workplace as essential to building a stronger business and making a positive impact in the communities we serve.

How has BDO Ireland benefitted from having an Access to the Workplace student on your team this summer?

BDO Ireland has benefitted significantly from hosting an Access to the Workplace student this summer. The programme provided an opportunity to welcome a motivated and enthusiastic student into the firm, contributing to both day-to-day operations and longer-term projects. Ryan’s presence brought a fresh perspective, a willingness to learn, and a strong sense of initiative, which positively impacted team dynamics.

The experience also reinforced BDO’s commitment to inclusion, offering our student meaningful exposure to a professional environment while allowing the team to engage in mentorship and knowledge-sharing. The student gained valuable insights into the workings of a professional services firm, while BDO benefited from their contributions, energy, and unique viewpoint.
