Supporting Excellence and Opportunity in a New Academic Year

DCU’s campuses are alive with activity this week, as students make their return for a new academic year. Over 19,000 students have arrived on campus to begin or continue their university journey, enjoying Clubs and Socs Fairs, campus tours and the many other orientation activities on offer. Already, this year’s Freshers are discovering new friendships that will last far beyond their time in university.

Our supporters play a vital role in empowering these students to excel at university and fulfil their potential. This year, our donors will support at least five PhD candidates to pursue doctoral research that makes an impact in society, as well as funding scholarships for elite student athletes, young entrepreneurs, and scholarships that enable young people from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue their dream of higher education at DCU.

Doctoral scholarships supported by DCU’s donors in 2023/24 will include:

DCU’s first Access PhD Scholarship was created with support from Harry and Susan Hartford. This fully funded scholarship aims to level the playing field for students who are underrepresented at PhD level. Scholarship recipient Hannan Galeb began her doctoral studies at DCU on Monday. Speaking on the impact of her scholarship, Hannan said:

“When my family moved to Dublin from Iraq, it opened up more opportunities for me in education, especially as a woman. I wanted to take advantage of that – because education is everything. Without this scholarship, I would not have had the financial support to do a PhD. This is a life-changing opportunity to be able to do what I love and pursue a career in lecturing and research.”
